A New look for an ancient inn in Suffolk

The 15th-century Swan at Lavenham in Suffolk has just completed a two-year facelift programme. The hotel has refurbished its public areas and its 45 bedrooms and suites, and has opened a new contemporary-style Brasserie.

The Swan has kept the Airmen’s Bar, with its Second World War memorabilia, and the Gallery restaurant, which has two AA Rosettes for its cooking. The new Brasserie overlooks the courtyard and features new open-work screens crafted by a local Suffolk metalworker.

The ancient hotel was built as three timber-framed houses around 1400. By 1667 it was a well established inn. The landlord then was John Girling and the Girling family still live in the town. Lavenham has more than 300 listed buildings and has changed little since the 15th century. Rates at the Swan start at £200 for a double/twin room per night including breakfast.
