A Georgian pub rises from the ashes in Wiltshire

A traditional country pub and hotel has reopened after suffering a serious fire last summer. The Beckford Arms, a Georgian coaching inn on the edge of the Fonthill Estate in Wiltshire, has undergone a complete and sympathetic refurbishment.

The eight en-suite bedrooms have been redesigned to be bigger and brighter. Beds have Egyptian cotton, Siberian goose-down duvets and vintage Welsh blankets. Rooms now also have flat-screen TVs, DVD library, internet radios and iPod docking. The garden has a boules piste, hammocks and a terrace for drinks,
lunch or afternoon tea.

Pravin Nayar is coming back to the Beckford’s restaurant as head chef. The menu now includes deep fried rabbit legs, as well as old favourites such as homemade pork pies with piccalilli (an English relish made with chopped pickled vegetables and spices). In commemoration of the fire, Nayar will also be smoking trout, game and Wiltshire ham in a garden smoker. On Sundays guests can order a whole chicken spit-roasted on the bar’s open fire to share and carve at the table.

The wine list has been re-vamped and beers now include a new, exclusive beer from local brewer Keystone called Phoenix (its name also commemorates the fire). There are ice lollies made with organic apple juice for children and an adult version made with Ashton Press cider.

Room rates are from £95 to £120 including breakfast.
